Sex Pistols Punk Influence

Jayla Parker |November 9

The Sex Pistols formed in 1975 in London, The Sex Pistols made punk rock music for their three years together. For the two and a half years the band was active, they initiated the punk movement in the United Kingdom. They’re still culturally significant to the punk image. The four original members from when the group first started were Johnny Rotten, Steve Jones, Paul Cook, and Glen Matlock. Then later, Glen Matlock was replaced by Sid Vicious.

The new compilation is a companion piece to 'Pistol'*

The Sex Pistols were active from 1975-1978, 1996, 2002-2003, 2007-2008. With the one album: Never Mind The Bollocks, Here's The Sex Pistols. Later on, Sid Vicious died from a heroin overdose in February of 1979. The three remaining members made songs for the “Sex Pistols Story” (The Great Rock’ n’ Roll Swindle). Then later the band was put in the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame but refused to attend the ceremony stating the museum “a piss stain.”

The band setup was Johnny Rotten on vocals, Steve Jones played guitar, drummer Paul Cook and the bassist Glen Matlock then replaced by Sid Vicious the Sex Pistols came under the management of Malcom McClaren, who was a visual artist and a boutique owner and for a short period of time managed the New York Dolls. At the time, Steve Jones, Paul Cook, and Glen Matlock were looking for a singer and recruited John Lydon, who did not have any singing experience but had unhinged charisma. John Lydon, later renamed Johnny Rotten, went on to play their first show, which ended in an altercation that made the band have to pull the plug and leave.

The Sex Pistols later were signed to a label named EMI but later dropped after their first single, ‘Anarchy in the U.K’ which started controversy, and so did their next single’ God Save The Queen.’ (By the label Virgin) by the time of their later single, Glen Matlock was replaced by Sid Vicious. Their sole ep was released in October of 1977 ‘Never Mind The Bollocks, Here’s The Sex Pistols” which went No.1 in the UK

The Sex Pistols touring was challenging as many venues refused to book them. In their last show in San Francisco the lead singer Johnny Rotten said, “Ever get the feeling you’ve been cheated?” And the very next day announced the band would be splitting up.

Rotten changed his name back to John Lydon and formed Public Image Ltd, which had a run of well-received records in the U.K. Vicious was arrested on suspicion of murdering his girlfriend Nancy Spungen in New York City and died of a heroin overdose while awaiting trial. Cook and Jones performed with several Hard Rock acts. In 1996, the four original Pistols reunited for a world tour they dubbed the Filthy Lucre tour; since then, they’ve performed many additional shows and tours.

The sex pistols greatly influenced punk fashion with their hair style, clothing, and music. Their music was also a large influence on punk, creating an image of anarchy.
