Fashion Satisfaction

By: Sydney Jackson

The fashion landscape for high school students in 2024 is diverse, inclusive, and constantly evolving. Teenagers are redefining traditional fashion rules and embracing their own unique sense of style, creating a vibrant and dynamic fashion culture within their schools and communities.

Many ask the question, is it the student’s own individual style they showcase; Or is their style influenced by the people around them and what the new social trends are? There are a multitude of reasons why a student might dress the way they dress. One reason is the desire to fit in and be accepted by their peers. In high school and college, there is often a strong emphasis on social status and popularity, and students may feel pressure to conform to what is seen as popular or trendy in order to gain approval from their classmates. Another reason is the influence of social media and celebrity culture. Platforms like Instagram and TikTok showcase the latest fashion trends and styles. Students may feel compelled to imitate these looks in order to keep up with current fashion trends and be seen as fashionable and stylish.

After interviewing a range of students with all different styles they all came to the conclusion that they like to wear clothes that are comfortable. Comfort can be defined in many ways. Some really enjoyed hoodies and sweatpants. Others really liked sleepwear. Freshman Krislyn Lopez prefers wearing ripped jeans and cropped shirts, “I love the way jeans make me look. I love the feel of cropped shirts. They're very comfortable for me, even if some tend to disagree”.

Sometimes teenagers and adults have that one outfit they can rely on. The one outfit that makes them feel on top of the world. Or maybe, they just really love the way it looks.

P.J. a Sophomore at Sandia mentioned that their go to any day is “Either my villain graphic T-shirt from Target, or my black suede vans that go with any outfit I wear!”

A huge thing with teenagers today, and especially with Sandia highschoolers is thrifting!

Thrifting is a great way to save money, find clothes that are unique and may not be produced as much as they once were. During a lively and fun Interview with Colette Dilworth she expressed, “I get my clothes from many places here in Albuquerque and online, but honestly I thrift most of the stuff I wear. My closet is a bit random; So I tend to throw things together and see what presents itself”.

Haircuts and nail choices deserve their own section. However, we don't have the space to list all the types and varieties shared at Sandia. One thing for sure is that the girls eyelash extensions that defy gravity and can survive spring winds are a popular trend. Don’t forget about acrylic nails that may make it challenging to complete certain tasks, top the list of trends! For guys, their hairstyles tend to represent many iconic styles. Whether it's a throwback to the 80s with a mullet. Or a perm that looks like your moms broccoli salad. There's still other hairstyles that may remind you of ice cream, popcorn, ramen, or lettuce but we don’t have time to explain all that. A common phrase online nowadays is the ‘Edgar’ haircut. The Edgar haircut, also known as the "bowl cut" or "mushroom cut.”

Whether you're into hairstyles that kinda look like steamed vegetables, or comfy clothes that keep you warm and cozy in New Mexico's fluctuant weather! Everyone has their own sense of style even if we may look back as adults and say “Oh my, what were we thinking?” At Sandia everyone represents themselves differently and everyone has their way of making a snag in the fabric. A snag in the fabric is a way of saying we matadors don't conform to any specific Fashion category. We’re just… different! Different is not bad!
