Sandia High School Adopts Tardy Sweeps, Aiming to Combat Late Arrivals School-Wide

By:Gabriel Ahmed

As of Jan. 30, 2024, Sandia High School will start to implement tardy sweeps to try to reduce the amount of late arrivals by choosing a certain building to lock down. Teachers will be asked to close and lock their door after the last bell so that tardy students will have to walk down to the office and receive a pass back to class, along with lunch detention. This new system hopes to prevent late students and will provide a sort of threat to the percentage that thinks it is okay to show up to class tardy. This article will provide tips and tricks to try to prevent tardiness school-wide along with some information and data about how tardiness affects the average high school student living their everyday normal life which could be you!

Being on time for classes is crucial for both academic achievement and discipline in general. Tardiness not only disrupts the flow of the class but also creates a negative vibe for the rest of the day. Therefore, it is crucial for high school students to create effective ways to avoid being tardy and to arrive early to class. By implementing a system of time management techniques and a self agenda, students can significantly reduce the likelihood of being late to their classes.

One of the most effective ways to avoid being tardy is to establish a consistent morning routine. This routine should have a set system such as setting a consistent alarm in order to wake up, allowing for enough time to get ready, having a balanced and healthy breakfast, and gathering all necessary materials for the school day. Additionally, preparing the night before by organizing school supplies, packing bags, and laying out clothes can create a smooth operation come morning, reducing the risk of forgetting essential items and being late to school.                                               Another crucial strategy for being on time is to utilize time management techniques, such as planners or digital calendars, to keep track of assignments, projects, and extracurricular activities. When asked about the most effective way to manage time, a Sandia student said they often like to set reminders on their phone using the, you guessed it, reminders app. By taking the little time to set up reminders on their phone, this student is able to effectively know when upcoming events are and when they should turn in any assignment. By keeping a clear overview of their schedule, students can manage their time efficiently, ensuring that they have sufficient time to travel between classes without being late. Along with this, students should focus on creating a plan for their daily tasks to avoid last-minute rushes, which often lead to tardiness and a bad mood for the remainder of the day.

Developing a system to track travel time between classes can be crucial in arriving early as well. High school students should memorize the layout of the school and the distance between each classroom. By factoring in obstacles such as crowded hallways or staircases, students can plan their routes accordingly to ensure an on time arrival.

In addition to these strategies, students can use technology to their advantage in order to be on time everyday. Setting alarms or reminders on their phones or other devices can serve as a helpful tool for transitioning between classes. Using technology to stay up to date about any schedule changes, such as modified class times or relocated classrooms, can also prevent confusion and potential tardiness.

Moreover, creating an open communication and relationship with teachers can be a big help in addressing any obstacles to being late. By talking with your teacher about challenges and seeking advice on time management, students can benefit from the guidance and support of their teachers.

In conclusion, being on time in high school is a valuable skill that contributes to academic success and discipline. Implementing a consistent morning routine, managing time effectively, becoming more familiar with the school layout, utilizing technology, and maintaining open communication with teachers are effective strategies for avoiding tardiness and arriving early to classes. By integrating these habits into their daily lives, high school students can create a sort of schedule that will ensure on time and even early arrival that will serve them well beyond their academic years.
