ALBUQUERQUE, NEW MEXICO- As a Sandia Matador, there are a lot of traditions that one has to know, as the traditions make students and teachers feel connected. There have been many events and traditions that Sandia has had and created within the past few years.
Evolution
New traditions come, go or get better! Traditions can change because of new generations as interests and preferences evolve with the student body. English teacher Cynthia Magoffe says, “There have been many great traditions during my 22 years of teaching at Sandia. It’s fun to see Sandia make up more for the future.” It is important to keep an open mind about change and show support for the school by participating in these traditions.
Changes
A few favorite traditions of many have been removed. Freshmen, Justin Pham and his cousin, Darlene Dao said, “I haven’t ever heard of Talent Shows or Battle of the Bands at Sandia.” There actually used to be such a thing at Sandia, along with Homecoming Tailgating, Mole Day and Teacher Versus Students Softball Games.
A Tailgate is a party that happens in the parking lot before a big event. In this case the event would be Homecoming. Mole Day was typically celebrated by chemistry teachers and students. The celebration is for Avogadro's number (6.02 x 1023). The Teacher Versus Student Softball Games was a very fun activity to have with teachers and students. It was a fun way to bond and strengthen relationships, which sadly, is no longer at Sandia. Time has just evolved, and with it, so have activities. However, there are many traditions still at Sandia.
The traditions are important to help create a sense of unity, pride and belonging with students. Traditions are also a continuity to a school's history. There is a significant impact on school pride when students connect to their school. When students participate in traditions they may feel a sense of ownership and pride for their peers and their school. It is incredible to see evolution over the years at Sandia.
