ALBUQUERQUE, NEW MEXICO – Baseball season has started very strong. Marc Hilton, the head coach of Sandia’s baseball teams and former Sandia alumnus is proudly leading the Matadors to victory. The Varsity Team knocked the Cougars out of the field when the Matadors beat them 14-4 in their most recent game. Varsity has a win streak of three games so far this season, and look forward to playing the Las Cruces Bulldawgs on Saturday, March 9 at 12 p.m.
What to Expect from Our Baseball Team
The players are very unique in their own ways and they are excited for this season. Head Coach Marc Hilton is doing a great job. Every player has their own goals for the season. Freshman player on C-Team, Devin Griego says, “I have many goals, but one has to be pitching.” Each team stands mighty with win streaks. There are various ways to prepare for these games from a players perspective and from a coach’s perspective. Coach Hilton prepares his team for every possible situation. “Whether that be our pitchers, hitting, defense being developed, everything we do to be successful on the field and on their own,” stated Hilton. The compassion on these teams is phenomenal.
Stand Out!
The athletes on Varsity, Junior Varsity, and C-Team are a talented bunch. “The athletes have significant playing experience at this level, the work ethic, and the coachability makes everything very easy for me,” says Coach Hilton. The players have welcomed their new coach with an open mind to keep the baseball tradition going. These athletes have the incredible opportunity to stand out and make a real difference in this world. The teams will show the importance of hardwork, dedication, and perseverance.
There are high expectations from these guys to be outstanding role models on the field and off the field. The team relies on each other to fulfill their role and give their best efforts in all upcoming games and practices. Much responsibility comes with being a high level athlete, for example, balancing academics and clubs or extracurricular activities. There are also expectations for good sportsmanship, on and off the field. Treating other opponents, teammates, coaches, officials, teachers and more with respect.
Behind the scenes
The common interest of baseball brings the teams together, of course. During the long road trip to Las Cruces, Coach Hilton expects to have a great time with team building throughout the trip. The Las Cruces Bulldawgs are another solid team. It is going to be a challenge, but these guys will be up for it. Being ready for this challenge is crucial! The coaches and athletes have to be mentally and physically prepared. We are counting on these Matadors to pull through.
