The bathrooms at Sandia have gotten even worse within the new semester and year happening. Last year, the bathroom mirrors in commons were taken down because too many students were hanging out in them. This year, administration insisted on doing tardy sweeps because no one was going to class. The average guess of how many students ditch is more than half of the whole school.
Maddie Radcliff, a freshman, states that “The bathrooms are disgusting for us to use. There is a lack of toilet paper, paper towels and soap. The walls and ceilings have inappropriate drawings and overall smell nasty. There are more girls in the bathroom than there needs to be, it tends to be overcrowded.”
The boys bathroom does not seem to be better either. Luke Bertrand, a freshman, says the bathrooms had spilled milk and urine on the floor, drawings on the walls and not even locks on the doors. Bertrand states “There should be someone to check in on the bathrooms at least most of the time.”
On Jan. 20, 2024, Frances Lovato, Sandia’s Vice Principal, came into the Senate room asking what their ideas were for improving the bathrooms. Lovato stated that she was thinking about starting a “Bring Back Our Bathrooms” campaign. “Something for students to know that they have been heard about the issue and admin is trying to fix it,” she added.
Further on, Senate put up posters and paper for students to use for drawing. Each poster had a positive saying or something about keeping our bathrooms cleaner. There are still crowded bathrooms, but it has definitely gotten a bit better. The paper for drawings is being used but some posters did get taken down.
The Activities Director, Ann Holmes states “I don’t know why students like to hang out in the bathroom.” Sandia doesn’t have that many custodians and since the bathrooms are not as modern they are harder to maintain. Holmes goes on, saying “If more Clubs or Groups could contribute with certain bathrooms it would help a lot.”
There is always going to be more we can do to improve our bathrooms and our school. Senate is making the first step, maybe we can make the second. Join Senate and our Administrators Office in keeping our bathrooms clean.
