There are many different types of bullying students go through, be it online or in person, and many don't know how to stop it…
Many students don't speak up about bullying, mostly out of shame or fear. You can get bullied by anyone. First of all, teachers and administrators should be observant and knowledgeable. The parents of the bully and the bullied should be as knowledgeable to prevent any bullying. Preventing bullying is very important because it could lead to a dark road for some. An anonymous student said, “When I got bullied I was very depressed and developed anxiety really bad, now that I spoke up I got help.” If you are getting bullied, it's best to tell your parents or someone you trust. Cyberbullying is a common thing nowadays for kids. If you are getting bullied online, don't respond because it could make it worse and, once again, tell someone. The anonymous student says “I’ve been bullied online and it sucks, at first I was scared to speak out which never really made sense to me, I told my parent and they told the school. The school helped a lot.” When you get bullied, it can be hard not to bully back, but it's best to just walk away and/or tell them to stop. If they don't, tell an adult about what's going on.
Bullying someone doesn't make you cool. Bullying could lead people to be depressed, anxious or overwhelmed. Adie Torres, a 10 grader, says, “I've seen bullying in school, but never said anything because I was scared even though I wasn’t the one to get bullied.'' There are many situations where students see bullying but never say nothing, it has to change. You never know… you could change a person's life if you speak up for them. Having a safe environment for students is very important. Torres states, “Now I say something because if my little siblings were to get bullied, I would want someone to speak up or for them to tell me.” How most students learn how to bully is from their surroundings and who they look up to. Many might think it's normal, but in reality it's not, and it should be talked about more. If you are being bullied, don't be scared to speak up.
